Guitarist Ed Bickert, upon being
asked how he selected the tunes for a set of music, replied that he simply used the five
B's; a Bossa, a Blues, a Bop tune, a Ballad and a Burner. Journey encompasses all of the
elements of a great set of music, including the five B's, performed in a mutual exchange
of joy, and yes, every tune exudes a passion and love of the music that makes each one a
Burner. Journey is an apt title for this recording, considering that it represents the
fruition of a long road for Giuseppe Continenza, who travelled from his home in Pescara,
Italy to the United States in 1990 to study at the Guitar Institute of Technology. After
mentoring with Joe Diorio and other great guitarists, he returned to Italy to create a
space for the ascension of his musical spirit and hone the craft of playing jazz. And so
it is now that many of the guitarists that were his mentors and teachers in the U.S.A.,
artists like Joe Diorio and Gene Bertoncini, travel to Italy to play with him.
The journey has come full circle.

On this
recording it is American veteran guitarist Vic Juris who made the journey to play with
Giuseppe. Vic's dark sound and liquid lines add to the depth of this recording, and
provide a wonderful foil to Giuseppe's crystalline sounding guitar. Journey is also an
appropriate title for the interaction between these two very giving musicians, with every
solo unfolding as a joyful outing along paths free from the weeds of ego, with surprises
around each bend. Check out the use of the nylon string guitar played by Vic on Summertime
and How Insensitive, and Giuseppe on Isn't She Lovely and the intro to All the Things You
Are.
There is something intangible about music that communicates on this level, something that
allows repeated listening and the sense of discovering something new each time. Perhaps it
is the intrinsic joy in the playing of these two great guitarists, or perhaps it is the
mutual acceptance of the music that carries them along. However it is defined, Journey
offers a spirited flight with two expert pilots in the cockpit, first class all the way.
